Prolonged heat and high humidity softened asphalt on the Kurigram-Chilmari road near Anandabazar in Ulipur on 1 June 2026. Rickshaw and auto-rickshaw wheels reportedly stuck to parts of the road surface, disrupting movement.

Data from the Rajarhat weather observatory showed the maximum temperature rising from 35°C on 29 May to 36.5°C over the following days. High humidity made the heat feel even more severe.

Roads became quieter after midday, while rickshaw pullers, day labourers and agricultural workers faced the greatest strain. Health officials warned that extended exposure could increase the risks of dehydration, dizziness and heatstroke.

Residents were advised to drink enough fluids, avoid intense midday sun where possible and seek care when symptoms appear. Road authorities also need to inspect heat-damaged sections quickly.
